Biography

For the past 11 years, Shannon Tucker has diligently served  the citizens of Durham County as an Assistant Public Defender. She has extensive experience trying cases in Durham County's District and    Superior Courts, and has argued cases at the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court.  Now she wants to bring her wealth of experience, knowledge and commitment to Durham's District Court Bench.

A life-long resident of North Carolina, Shannon grew up in Raleigh and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an undergraduate before she graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law and was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in 1993. Following graduation from law school, she joined a private  firm in Goldsboro, where she handled criminal law, family law, real estate, personal injury, trusts and estates, and abuse and neglect cases. Her desire to spend more time in the courtroom trying cases led her to Durham and the Office of the Public Defender in 1994. She quickly amassed trial experience, and as the senior Assistant Public Defender in the office, Shannon has tried cases ranging from serious traffic matters to drug offenses, assaults and murders.

Over the past 11 years, Shannon has shared her knowledge and experience by serving on the Durham County Criminal Rules Committee, the Criminal Justice Partnership Advisory Board, and the North Carolina Public Defender Standards Committee. She has also served as a speaker for Durham County Teen Court, an instructor for the Hillside High School team in the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers' Wade Edwards Mock Trial Competition, and as a judge for the North Carolina Central University School of Law's Mock Trial Competition. She has been a guest legal commentator for Court TV and a guest legal expert for WRAL. In striving to always gain more knowledge of the law and improve her legal skills, Shannon is also a member of the Durham County Bar,  the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers and the North Carolina Bar Association.

Shannon is a member of the 2006 Leadership Durham program, sponsored by the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, which trains and educates the future leaders of Durham in Durham community and government affairs. Her class projects include working with the Hill Center and the Volunteer Center of Durham. She is also active in the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties, where she currently serves as the Chair of the 66th annual Bargain Sale, an important community service event that raised over $30,000 to aid the League's focus projects. For the past three years the JLDOC has focused its efforts on raising funds, awareness, and performing community service projects for the senior citizens of Durham and Orange Counties, while their focus for the next three to five years will be the children of our community.  This Spring she will be receiving the U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award Silver Medal for her many hundreds of hours of community service work.

Shannon and her husband David (a professional engineering consultant) and their two year-old daughter Carson live, work and attend school in Durham.
